Depression, Nutritional Management Status and Life Satisfaction of Elderly Women Who Care Their Grandchildren
Shin Su-Jin

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences of depression, nutritional management status, and life satisfaction of younger elderly women who were given care for their grandchildren.

Methods: This study used data from the 2014 National Survey on the Elderly. In this study, we focused on the 1,725 elderly women under 69 years old who responded to the questionnaire themselves and did not have dementia. We used the Short Form of the Geriatric Depression Scale and the Determine Your Nutrition Health Checklist. IBM SPSS Statistics 23.0 was used to conduct all statistical analyses, including t-tests and ¥ö2 tests.

Results: There was no statistically significant difference in the depression scores between the group taking care of grandchildren and the group not taking care of grandchildren. We found that the elderly who care for their grandchildren showed relatively good nutritional management status, but the level of satisfaction with social leisure activities was low.
Conclusion: These results show that it is necessary to elaborate the positive effects of nurturing grandchildren through in-depth exploration of nutritional management status of the elderly caring for grandchildren and to develop social leisure activity program for the elderly who participate in grandparenting.
